German avant pop group Propaganda may have only released one album, but their debut ‘A Secret Wish’ is still considered one of the most definitive synthpop albums of all time. Fronted by Claudia Brucken, the group relocated to London in 1983 after being signed to Trevor Horn’s ZTT Records, and disbanded as internal tensions rose following money disputes and Claudia Brucken’s marriage to Paul Morley - a music journalist and co-founder of ZTT. Despite reunion attempts with a partial line-up in 1998 and 2010, Propaganda never fully reunited, and ‘A Secret Wish’ remains their only album.

After Propaganda, Brucken continued to make music first with Thomas Leer, with whom she formed ‘Act’ and released one album ‘Laughter, Tears and Rage’. A brief solo career followed before Brucken met Paul Humphreys of OMD in 1996, and their musical collaboration continues to this day as ‘Onetwo’ and with their own label There(There).

The Jim Jones Revue at Concorde 2, Brighton - Wednesday 24th October 2012

Though individually they've been playing in various genre bands a lot longer The Jim Jones Revue have been perfecting their sound for the best part of five years now and they just keep getting better. One of my friends read a quote that ran something along the lines of if you added The Stooges to Jerry Lee Lewis and The MC5 and The Sonics you'd have the perfect Rock'n'Roll band and that is exactly what The Jim Jones Revue do. I might not have that exactly right but the sentiments are there and I completely agree. The JJR perform visceral garage punk like no other band on the planet right now.


The new album has seen the band explore new areas and add a bit of light and shade to their live show. That's not to say there's any let up in the sonic assault. They were careful to ensure that if they played a slower or more challeging tune they'd follow it with a faster, better known one. And they have so many great tunes now that towards the end I felt any one could have been the perfect ending to the set. They've always seemed tight live but three years of what seems like almost constant touring has made them better than ever. With the gig over my first thought was that I really wanted to go see them again, and that has to be the sign of a band that is hitting it's peak.


We'd arrived a little later then intended and only caught the last couple of numbers of Mudlow's blues soaked R&B. This was a pity as they had a decent sound with the vocalist singing in what one of my friends described as a "passable Tom Waits impression". From Waits to Beefheart as Honkey Finger took the stage. Effectively a one man band but with an extra man. I couldn't quite see why the second guitarist was required as main Honkey Finger man seemed to be doing everything important. They produced an ear-shredding blues noise which sounded promising at first but started to drag after a few songs.

Passenger at Concorde2 - 30/01/13

The phenomenally talented Mike Rosenburg, aka Passenger, played to a sold out show here at Concorde2 on Wednesday 30th January. First on stage was local lady Isobel Anderson who played a half hour slot, then the wonderful Stu Larsen took to the stage.

In the early 2000s, Mike was the front man for 5 piece band 'Passenger' who produced a critically acclaimed debut album under a major record label. In 2007 the band decided to go their separate ways and Mike decided to stick with his music, voice, and guitar to see where it would take him. Arguably, this is probably the best decision he's ever made. He then took to the streets and began busking, which has funded his last four records. Not only does busking help pay the bills, but it's also become a way of life for Mike, as he takes real pride and joy in getting to play real music on real streets to real people.


Although Brighton born and bred, Mike's created a huge fan base over in Australia since his first trip there in 2009. By the time Mike returned to the UK, he was by this point selling out 500 capacity venues over in Australia. Meanwhile, over in the UK, his fan base is continuing to slowly blossom. Supporting Ed Sheeran last year gave Mike and his music new ears to play to, and consequently fall in love with his beautiful, humourus, heartbreaking lyrics.

Rosenburg's latest creation, All The Little Lights, is about to be released on February 18th 2013. If songs such as "Let Her Go" and "Holes" are anything to go by, then this album is definitely one of the ones to watch for 2013.

Concorde2 was the penultimate date of Mike's UK tour this year, and all 14 dates were sold out in advance. He's then going on to tour the rest of Europe, of which most dates are already completely sold out in advance. One thing's for sure, Mike loves being on the road, and the experiences and people he meets along the way help inspire his incredible song writing. Although he's been professionally making music for well over a decade now, it looks like it's only the beginning for the insanely talented Rosenburg. Be sure to keep an eye on him over the coming months, and if you get a chance to see him live, be sure to grab a ticket before they're all gone.
